Economical ways of keeping your residence cool during hot weather.
Because you cannot bear to face the thought of astronomical air-conditioning bills, have you been suffering in the summer heat in your Colorado home. You can now stop suffering. There are a number of different things that you can do to keep your home cool even in the height of hot weather without spending an awful lot of money. Follow some of these suggestions and you can enjoy a nice, cool house without burning up your budget.
Ceiling Fans
A ceiling fan is one way in which your residence will stay cool and comfortable even with a limited budget. If you use a ceiling fan for 12 hours every day, you can cool your home down by about 7 degrees and it would only cost about $10 extra. That is a pretty good trade-off!
Draw the drapes.
An easy way to keep your residence cool when the sun is up is to draw your drapes or the drapes. Curtains, curtains and shades help to reflect the sun’s heat away from the inside of your residence. You are thus effectively cooling your home without using any power at all.
Turn Off the Lights
All illumination and appliances generate heat that increase the temperature inside your residence. Heat is also given off by large appliances. While you can’t turn off all your illumination and appliances, you can keep them to a minimum. Ensure that your lights and appliances are so placed that the heat generated will not affect the thermostat reading on your air-conditioning otherwise your air-conditioning will compensate by cooling the room more than is necessary.
Don’t Cook
If you want to cook or bake, you should realize that you are generating unnecessary heat within the home in the process. When you are cooking or baking, the heat from the oven can raise the temperature inside the residence by as much as 3 degrees or more. Instead of cooking, try to find something cool to eat. Fruit, salads and cold meat make for a light and refreshing meal in the hot weather.
Plant Some Shade
Plant some vegetation and bushes to shade the windows which receive the maximum amount of sun. This is not an overnight solution but you would be surprised at how cool the home is kept when they are fully grown. If your windows are effectively shaded by trees and plants, you will need to use your air conditioner or ceiling fans that much less.
Use proper insulation
In poorly insulated houses, the interior heats up quickly and retains heat longer when it is hot. Efficient insulation in your attic has the benefit of retaining cold air inside the residence and keeping out hot air. A simple upgrade from three inches of insulation to 12 inches can cut your power costs by about 10 percent.
Staying cool is important during the summer. When it is hot, you don’t feel like exerting yourself unless you are comfortable. Getting too hot is also unhealthy and it can cause you to have more serious problems if you don’t do something about it. With the help of these tips, beat the heat this hot weather.
